The Benefits Of Decompression Toys For Health: Fidget Spinners July 4, 2022 – Posted in: Blog
When you’re nervous, waiting for something that won’t come or you’re bored, what do you do? Just shut up or do something? Usually, when someone or maybe you are silent for a long time, you will subconsciously start moving your body as a sign of boredom/restlessness. Or, you’ll be looking for something to play with, like the tip of a pen or an object nearby. And, did you know that this activity is known as “fidgeting”? Fidgeting is a technique used to help you reduce stress and keep your brain focused on doing something. Well, lately there’s a toy trend called a fidget spinner. And, it turns out that the benefits of the fidget spinner are many.

The benefits of fidget spinners for health
The number of activities that must be done in a sitting position tends to make the legs barely move. The consequence is, that your body will rarely do physical activities that are good for body health. As a result, you will be at risk for weight gain and even diabetes. Sitting too long can also make you lose focus, making it easier for you to experience stress.
Studies conducted at the University of Leicester show that sitting too long can increase the risk of heart disease, and diabetes, and increase premature death. Other studies have shown that sitting too long can cause a sudden and significant decrease in blood flow to the legs which can lead to atherosclerosis.

Then, one way to overcome this is to stand up and move because this will help the leg muscles contract and blood flow to remain stable.
However, what about people who can’t stand for long periods? How can they reduce the harmful effects of sitting too long and keep them focused? The solution is to move the body – whether head, hands, feet, etc. – for a few minutes, playing with certain tools such as the tip of a pen, paper, etc., or using “Fidget Spinners”.
A fidget spinner is a device with a stable center and a disc with two or three oars that can be spun, like a ceiling fan. The device that rotates between the fingers was originally used for children with anxiety, autism, and ADHD.
Fidgeting can help kids with ADHD, right?
Certain toys have been known to calm children with sensory processing problems such as autism and ADHD. However, until now there has been no research that can prove the benefits of fidget spinners for children with ADHD.
After all, the treatment of mental illnesses including autism and ADHD requires comprehensive care. Starting from changes in lifestyle, environment, and therapy, to special treatment tailored to the needs.
A study in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology conducted by Rapport et al in 2015 showed that boys with ADHD, when placed in a swivel chair and allowed to rotate, performed better on memory tests. In contrast, children without ADHD performed worse than those who did without turning the chair.
So, it can be concluded that the impact of playing fidget spinner on everyone – including children with ADHD – is not the same. But Rapport suspects that fidget spinners won’t be of much help because playing fidget spinners doesn’t require the harsh body movements that could be responsible for increasing activity in the frontal and prefrontal brain areas that play a role in maintaining focus/attention.

Tips so that the fidget spinner is safe for children to play
Now, many people are looking for a fidget spinner. Its small size, the sound it emits, and the colors that glow when it is played are special pleasures for its users. The benefits of a fidget spinner are also quite a lot. So, it is not surprising that the fidget spinner is now so sought after by many people from small children to adults.
However, parents still need to pay attention to their children when playing with the fidget spinner. Because children can be at risk of choking on some small parts of the spinner/fidget spinner.
Parents need to pay attention to the age label, buy a fidget spinner at a trusted store to make sure that it has passed the test, follow the tips for playing the fidget spinner, make sure the spinner’s battery is locked, and check for damaged parts that can be a source of choking hazard for children.
